What Are the Causes of Sleep Apnea?

Did you know that sleep apnea can be caused by your genetics? Did you know that sleep apnea becomes more common as you age? The causes of sleep apnea are well documented, as sleep apnea may be common, but it is a very serious oral health disorder that in extreme cases, can cause an increase in blood pressure, hearts attacks, and strokes.

Sleep apnea consists of two main forms, central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea occurs when the signals sent from the brain to the chest muscles facilitating breathing while asleep, are interrupted. If the signals are not received, your body will not breathe regularly while sleeping. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when there is a blockage of your airways while asleep.

Various factors can increase your risk for sleep apnea, including your weight, age, and overall health. Males over the age of 40 are at an increased risk for sleep apnea. You are also at a heightened risk if you have an enlarged tongue, a deviated septum, large tonsils, a sinus infection, or nasal blockages.
