What is an Oral Cancer Screening?

Did you know an oral cancer screening is included in your six-month checkup? Well, it’s true. This is because the screening is extremely beneficial for detecting early signs of oral cancer, which can ultimately save your life and increase your treatment options.

Your oral cancer screening is a simple examination that involves Dr. Christopher Rouse or Dr. Mark Valrose looking for signs of oral cancer on your cheeks, tongue, and gums and even in the throat. Your dentist will examine your oral cavity for red and white patches or abnormal sores. Your dentist will also feel the tissues in your mouth for any lumps or other abnormalities. This examination will be easy and it won’t cause any pain. If abnormalities are detected, your dentist will discuss the next steps with you.

Everyone can benefit from an oral cancer screening. However, people who use tobacco products, heavily consume alcohol, have high and frequent sun exposure, or have a family history of oral cancer can be at a high risk of falling victim to oral cancer. These people should receive an oral cancer screening each time they come into our office for a checkup.
