Are You Ready for Floss Day?

It comes but once a year: The day after Thanksgiving is known in America as National Floss Day! No, we’re not talking about the dance craze that took the world by storm a few years ago. National Floss Day reminds us all of the importance of flossing between those pearly white teeth every day.

Flossing really hasn’t changed much over the years. You can choose from traditional thread floss, a Waterpik or similar device, or an interdental cleaner like Plackers. The key is to find a product that you will use and use consistently!

Flossing is important because it removes plaque from in between your teeth. When left between your teeth, plaque can cause cavities. It contains bacteria, and the bacteria produce acid that eats away at teeth enamel. If left alone to harden into tartar, plaque can cause gum inflammation and gum disease.

To floss correctly:

  • Floss once per day, every day
  • Use a strand of floss that is long enough to provide a clean section of floss for each tooth
  • Floss up and down, and in a curved C-shape around the base of each tooth
  • Throw away the floss afterward (don’t reuse it)

Some people with crowded teeth find it uncomfortable or bothersome to floss. It is important not to snap the floss into the gap between your teeth. Talk to our dentists if you have trouble flossing. We will provide custom recommendations and help you find a product that works for you.

When you think about it, it makes sense that National Flossing Day takes place after what is perhaps the biggest food day in America. Although it can be tempting to skip the step of flossing in your dental hygiene routine, it’s just as important as brushing. After any size meal or snack, food particulate and plaque will begin forming not only on the surfaces of your teeth, but also between your teeth. Floss is the best way to remove it.
